About Hiking Shoes

Invest in Your Adventure: Choosing the Perfect Hiking Shoe for Every Hike

The beauty of hiking lies in its accessibility. All you need is a sense of adventure, a good pair of legs, and the right hiking shoes to explore breathtaking trails. But with a vast array of hiking shoes available, choosing the perfect pair can feel daunting. Don't worry, outdoor enthusiasts! This guide will equip you with the knowledge to navigate the world of hiking shoes, ensuring you find the ideal companion for every adventure, from leisurely strolls on groomed paths to challenging treks through rugged terrain.

Know Your Terrain: Matching Hiking Shoes to Your Adventures

The most important factor to consider when choosing hiking shoes is the type of terrain you'll be tackling. Here's a breakdown of popular hiking shoe options for different terrains:

  • Day Hiking Shoes: These versatile shoes are ideal for well-maintained trails and moderate hikes. They offer good traction, comfort, and breathability for day trips on easy to moderate terrain.
  • Backpacking Boots: For overnight backpacking adventures or hikes with heavier loads, consider backpacking boots. They provide superior ankle support, stability, and a sturdier sole for carrying a backpack comfortably on uneven or rough terrain.
  • Trail Running Shoes: If you prioritize speed and agility on well-maintained trails, trail running shoes might be a good option. They offer lightweight construction, flexibility, and good traction for faster-paced hiking or trail running.

Considering the Elements: Waterproofing and Breathability

The weather conditions you'll encounter can influence your shoe choice:

  • Waterproof Hiking Shoes: For hikes in wet or rainy conditions, consider waterproof hiking shoes. These shoes feature a waterproof membrane that keeps your feet dry while maintaining breathability.
  • Breathable Hiking Shoes: For warm weather hikes or situations where breathability is a priority, choose breathable hiking shoes made from mesh or other lightweight materials.

Fit for Adventure: Ensuring Comfort on the Trail

Comfort is key for enjoyable hikes. Here's what to consider for a proper fit:

  • Proper Sizing: Ill-fitting shoes can lead to blisters and fatigue. Get professionally sized for hiking shoes, considering factors like width and arch support.
  • Try Before You Buy: Don't underestimate the importance of trying on hiking shoes with the socks you plan to wear on your hikes. Ensure a snug but comfortable fit with good heel lock.
  • Break-in Period: New hiking shoes might feel stiff initially. Wear them for short walks before your big adventure to break them in and avoid blisters.

Invest in Your Adventure: The Perfect Hiking Shoe Awaits

The right hiking shoes can make all the difference in your hiking experience. By prioritizing the factors discussed in this guide, you can choose a pair that perfectly matches your hiking style, terrain, and weather conditions. Remember, comfortable and supportive hiking shoes are an investment in your outdoor adventures. So, lace up for your next hike with confidence, knowing you have the perfect footwear to conquer any trail!

Comfortable with virtually no break in. My favorite boots

These boots seem well made, and are very comfortable right out of the box. They are great for walking and everyday use. The sole has lower profile traction lugs compared to a dedicated hiking boot. That said, the soles are great. Better than a traditional hiking sole for walking, these soles do not mark floors, they pick up less dirt, and so far, are genuinely slip-resistant, for me, on most surfaces and in most conditions. I look forward to challenging hiking in these. I have not done so yet, and these seem like they might favor on-rail and moderate terrain, since they don't have a significant shank for stability and for fending off big pointy rocks underfoot. Still, I expect these will become my primary SUV footwear for most uses. They are so comfortable and the traction is so good, I'll probably look past any technical shortcomings and use them for more demanding hikes just the same. The rubber toe rand is a nice touch. That part of boots tends to take a beating, and begins to look scuffed up. The rubber should prevent that. They look cool and are just the right height to give ankle support and keep out foul weather, yet you can drive in these as comfortably as moccasins. The Achilles tendon cut out is perfect, and there is no annoying chaffing around the ankle or back of foot. They did a particularly great job at designing these to be easy to get your foot into and out of. This last feature comes with a compromise. The gusset on the tongue only goes up as high as the first set of lace hooks. For my uses, I'll take the easy of putting them on over the added weather protection any day. My new favorite boots.UPDATE OCTOBER 2015These are still my favorite boots, and give more support in technical hikes and scrambles than I had initially thought. I hope they make these just the same forever.

Almost a home run.

I like these shoes. They are right on size-wise and appear to be well-constructed. They are warmer than most types of shoes like this that I have tried. The color is great. The speed lacing is great. They are comfortable right out of the box.The only thing I don't love is the tread. It is very aggressive (?) - it has a rough tread that loves to load up on mud. The mud stays in there until you scrape it out. Once the mud fills in the tread the traction is severely impaired. This is a problem with a lot of hiking boots or shoes. If only someone could make a self-cleaning tread then we'd have a definite 5 star shoe.

Great fit and comfort right out of the box

This is my first pair of Dunham hiking shoes. I had been a longtime user of New Balance 1400 shoes, but they have gotten very hard to find in my size. So after reading the reviews on the Dunham’s, I decided to give them a try. I have been wearing them for about a month, everyday and I am very impressed wither fit and comfort. I own and operate a small beef cattle farm and during winter months it requires a lot of walking during feeding time. I am very happy with the Dunham shoes so far and I would buy another pair.

Great Men’s boot!

This was a Christmas present for my husband. He loves them so much, we bought 2 more. Waterproof, comfortable and great support for plantar fasciitis. Price fluctuates, so keep your eye on the website.

Perfect fit, awesome quality.

I am 215 lbs with hard to fit feet (13 4E) and I love hiking. An injury to my lower leg left me with permanent nerve damage and a challenge to find orthotics and footwear for the past 40 years or so. These boots are amazing in fit and quality. I purchased a pair in May of 2017 and tested them out around town. These are the kind of shoes that when you slip your foot into for the first time you know right away that they are "the ones". Subsequent hikes in the Oregon and Washington Cascades gave me the confidence to take them on treks in the Alps and Himalayas. Carried a twenty pound pack on steep up and downhills are no problem. No blisters ever. The insoles that they came with slip out and I can use my custom orthotics instead. The lacing is quick and logical and allows one to adjust tension for up or down hill. I wear merino wool socks with a thin liner over. A sock company in New England makes the best socks on the planet. Good match for these boots. With several hundred miles of trails on these there is no sign of any wear or degradation. The soles are not overly aggressive but provide excellent grip on rock and dry trails. The tread does not hold dirt or mud and self cleans. On very muddy or slippery trails one may want a boot with more lugs. The waterproofness worked for awhile stepping through water several inches deep but eventually this feature broke down slightly as can be expected with the abuse I gave these on the trails. They are also very good looking and can be worn around town. I really appreciate shoe makers who cater to the ends of the bell curve on foot size. Have been a New Balance fan for years for this reason. Also own New Balance 990 V4. Fantastic shoe that I will review as well. One other thing. I found out that boot laces become imbedded with grime which causes friction through the lace lugs making it difficult to adjust the lace tension. A new pair of laces for about two dollars in a shop in Kathmandu was like having a new set of tires. I washed the old pair and kept them in my pack as a spare. All in all would definitely buy another pair but I don't think I can wear these out.
