These are beautiful boots. However, they do run a half size small for Frye. My Harness 12 R are size 8.5. I took other reviewers advice and got a 9. Very glad I did. They fit great. They are not as narrow in the calf (shaft) as I expected. Even with skinny jeans tucked in, there is still some space, and I have regular sized legs. They look great on. Please be aware, they are SUPER distressed. Actually, too much for my liking. I polished them with brown shoe polish immediately, and now I love them. They arrived very matte, worn out looking. After one round of polish, all scuffs and distressed looks are even and polished. Better suited for my desired look. I would definitely recommend them, especially at this fantastic price for Frye boots...they are the best!
Love these boots. Love them. Love them. Every previous reviewer is correct: they have a distressed appearance. For me, it's one of my favorite qualities about this boot. It's not intended to be polished-perfect. These have that classic Frye authenticity about that them make them distressedfully beautiful in their own right. The dark brown is rich in hue and although the leather is stiff, there is a softness about them that is lovely. I would say the zippers are a bit tricky, but I'm hoping they will get easier as the boot gets older. I wear a 7 shoe and always buy 6.5 Frye. They feel a bit snug (width, not length) and I am certain this, too, will loosen up with age. I just ordered the same pair in black and decided not to order a 7 -- sticking with my standard 6.5. Can't wait for them to arrive!
Boots are beautiful, unbelievable price~ They do run small, though. I'm an 8 in just about all shoes & boots. These were definitely a struggle to get on because they don't unzip very far-- and although I am sure they'd loosen up a bit -- that seemed like it would be a somewhat painful process. I just ordered a second pair in 8.5. I'd rather not suffer through a break-in process and get a little bigger and wear a thicker sock if they get to the point where they are too stretched. I have skinny ankles and average calves I think (but long legs) so these hit me lower than the knee...and these were very tight at the very top of the boot. I never have that problem, boots are always baggy at the top. I'd rather take them and get them stretched a bit, than have a "gap" around the top, though. Bottom line, great black 'vintage' leather boot. super nice thick leather. they are stiff and hold their shape and don't bag around ankles. But I wouldn't buy if you have larger calves (mine are 14.25 inches), or wide feet. And I would say it would be smart to size up a 1/2.
I really wanted to love these boots. I coveted them for so long, and when Amazon had the 2016 labor day sale, I picked these up for $116. That price was so much better than the original $398 price tag so I could not resist! While the leather is of good quality, the shape of the boot disappointed me. I was hoping for something more sliming and elegant, but the calves were too wide with a slight narrowing at the top. The shape of the calves reminded me of rain boots. Sadly, these had to go back. They just did not live up to what I had hoped. Regarding the sizing, I sized up to an 8. I am normally a 7.5 with a narrow width, and the 8s fit well. The length was perfect and not too narrow. They actually would have fit better with thick wool socks for winter rather than my anklet socks. Like other reviewers said, the color is not a shiny black like the stock photos. The color is a bit more muted with the stonewashed look. Overall, these boots are great quality and would last years, but they were not the style I was looking for. I will try the Melissa Harness boot next to see if that style works better for me. I attached some photos to help show what I meant about the shape of the calves.
Love my Frye boots. Comfortable and great fit. I usually wear a 7.5 wide in dress shoes or pumps (Aerosoles brand). I wear an 8M in athletic shoes like Asics. I ordered the 8.5 in these boots and they fit great. I did not want them to be too tight. I was surprised the calves fit well. After reading other reviews I thought I might not get them on over my calves. I have athletic, muscular calves. I am 5'2" and about 116 lbs. Not sure if I could get them over skinny jeans but they will fit over leggings and tights. The dark brown leather has a distressed look, as well as the sole of the boots. It is not a defect. They are designed to have a worn look. Think dark wash jeans vs. distressed jeans. You can buy all types of jeans new but the different washes will give them an aged appearance. Same with these Frye boots. The price was great too, under $150.
As soon as I opened the box, I could smell the nice quality leather. I immediately fell in love, the color was perfect. So I go to try them on, unzipping the right boot, only to find that the zipper is actually a faux zipper (or at least is was on the right boots). So I'm like okay, I'll try to get my foot in anyway.....no chance. So I pull out the left boot, unzip and here I finally figure out the right boot, is defective (the leather on the inside of the zipper was uncut). Now that I'm actually able to get at least one boot on, I could assess more. The biggest issue with these boots, is actually the calf circumference. The leg opening is a good size, but from the top of the shaft down to the ankle, the boots actually flair way out before tapering to the ankle. If your like me and don't really have very muscular calves, then these boots look really dumb. I felt like I needed the calves of a linebacker to fill them out. Such a shame, minus the defect, they are very beautiful boots, just too big in the calves.
The shaft of this boot is so tight you can’t even wear tights with them. I have several pairs of boots and have never needed wide calf. The shaft is so narrow it defeats the purpose of being able to wear with jeans. The boot looks nice but that’s about it!
