The technique of the "double seam" is a traditional and very difficult design. The shaft and sole base are connected with seams. First, the insole is punched out and stapled on the lasts. Then with the puncture seam, the upper leather is sewn together with the lining and the insole lip. The upper leather and lining are placed outwards. The overhangs of the upper leather are sewn with a second seam - the double seam. Thus, the shoe is sewn "twice" The pull hook in the middle of the tongue of the Hanwag Grünten allows horizontal and vertical fixation of the tongues. Since the flap of the Hanwag Grünten can no longer slip, there are no more rubbing and pressure points. The clamping hook allows two-zone lacing. This ensures that the shoe can be tied independently in the instep and shaft area. So you can tie the Hanwag Grünten when going uphill, firmer at the bottom and looser at the top. Great boots!!! Lightweight but built solid. Much hands-on craftsmanship went into making these boots, it's obvious. Great looking too. Their not waterproof so I coated them with a good coating of Zamberlan Hydrobloc Proofing Cream sold here at amazon which made the leather much darker but very shiny and now waterproof. Personally I think they look even better now.
My foot is a 9W size, but I almost always need a 9.5 shoe/boot. This boot fit me perfectly at 9.5. I was concerned at first fitting, how tight it was, but after a trip around the house I discovered it's perfect. Walking around with them fully laced up showed how important the breaking in process is, and I think it's going to take a little time and mileage (but worth it). The picture showed a darker grain leather than what I received, but a couple of coats of mink oil and I have the color and protection in one go. It's not waterproof, but I gave it 3 good coats of boot wax (especially at the stitched seams) to protect it. Can't wait for some hiking!
Great construction, luxurious leather lining, but this boot is Nubuck which is very easily stained (like suede), very hard to clean, and the boot is not waterproof -- no goretex type membrane and no practical way to waterproof the nubuck (such as with traditional beeswax and pinetar, Sno Seal or Hubberd's). I really like the boots, but couldn't make sense of this particular model.
Everything about these boots is amazing. The inner material is soft and supportive. The toe of the boot is wide for plenty of toe space, I have had zero issues walking down steep slopes with my toes hitting the boot. Up hill, the boots hug the back of your foot, resisting sliding up and down as you go uphill, reducing rubbing and blisters. Double stitch construction on the sole is premium quality. Lacing system is versatile and easy to lace with the ball bearing rollers. Ankle support of boot has extra padding. I just wish this boot came with the option of getting a gore-tex liner, because they are not waterproof. With good oil treatment, they are VERY water resistant, but not waterproof. Over-all, I've owned a variety of boots, including Danners, Lowas and Keen, these boots are by far the most comfortable I've ever owned, I can wear these all day, hiking up and down mountains and my feet feel great. Great combo of high durability and high comfort.
