This guide will delve into the world of loafers, exploring different styles, materials, and outfit pairings to help you master the art of loafer chic.

A Legacy of Style: Unveiling the History of Loafers

Loafers boast a rich history, dating back to the 1930s. While their exact origins are debated, they quickly gained popularity due to their comfort and versatility. From Norwegian farmers to American penny loafer icons like Elvis Presley, loafers have graced the feet of various individuals throughout history. Today, loafers remain a staple in wardrobes worldwide, a testament to their enduring appeal.

A Loafer for Every Occasion: Exploring Different Styles

The beauty of loafers lies in their variety. Here are some of the most popular styles:

  • Penny Loafers: A classic with a signature strap and diamond-shaped cutout (often adorned with a penny!), penny loafers are perfect for smart casual looks.
  • Horsebit Loafers: Featuring a signature metal銜 (han)銜 (han) (guàn) (bit) across the vamp, horsebit loafers exude a touch of equestrian elegance.
  • Tassel Loafers: A dressier option, tassel loafers add a touch of flair with their decorative tassels. They pair well with suits or dress pants.
  • Driving Loafers: Originally designed for, well, driving, these loafers often have a thinner sole and a more relaxed silhouette. They're perfect for casual weekend wear.

Material Matters: Choosing the Right Loafers for You

Loafers come in a variety of materials, each offering a distinct look and feel:

  • Leather: The go-to choice for a sophisticated look. Leather loafers can be dressed up or down depending on the style.
  • Suede: Offers a softer, more relaxed aesthetic. Suede loafers are perfect for adding a touch of texture to your outfit.
  • Canvas: A great option for summer, canvas loafers are lightweight and breathable.

Comfy right out of the gate!

Love these boots! Comfortable right out of the gate. Plenty of toe space, great ankle support, good traction, water resistant, good arch support, and not overly hot. Also, great looking boots! Not heavy or clunky. What more could you ask for in a boot? I have very high arches and these boots are supportive as is. At first I added a thin insole, but found I didnt really need it. If you do anticipate needing a substantial insole, I would go up a half size, perhaps. They are water resistant, but full on walking through deep creeks... not so sure about. Rain, puddles, mud...great. The only downside, as some others noted, is that you will undoubtedly get some wearing (rips) on top of the shoe where the foot bends. I have been wearing the boots for two seasons for daily walks of 3miles-ish (mostly just in fall and winters) and just noticed the holes recently... I'm sad, but have gotten tons of use and they are still very functional with many miles leftin them.

Great shoe for LEO

I have had these shoes for over a year and am just now replacing them. They are very comfortable and keep my feet dry. They are also lightweight and durable. With being on my feet all day these have done well and I will be buying a new pair.

Sturdy light-hiker, room for customizing your arch support/insole, roomy toe box, 2 hooks at top

I have worn Keen Targhee IIs for 5 years and worn out 2 pair, enjoying them a lot, but sometimes finding them clumsy when going down slippery slopes when tired. I wanted something with a lower heel, but still having ankle protection and good traction and waterproof. These seem to match that. These are more like a heavy duty rubberized high top sneaker than a typical hiking boot. They are lighter, yet seem like they will hold up well. The heel is only slightly higher than the toe. You can sense large rocks or indentations in the ground underneath, which I like. The insole is nearly flat and very thin and removable with ample room so that you could easily replace it with Superfeet or some other insole you prefer if you want more support. When I first put them on, I thought that the seem at the upper ankle would irritate me, but I decided it is just a matter of finding the right tightness to lace them. I find the ankle and above area a little less comfortable than the Targhee IIs but think it will be okay with thicker socks...I was wearing fairly thin just over the ankle socks. Unsure whether the ankle would be uncomfortable, I just wore them all day the first day doing yard work and they felt fine. The 2nd day, I work them on a 5 mile moderately up and down hike over single tracks, light mud, gravel, crossing creeks on rocks and they were comfortable. I think I will have better traction in them than the Targhee IIs because they are more flexible and more level, making them less clumsy. I think I'll be less likely to slip on gravel in them or turn my ankle on uneven ground, being able to sense the ground through them more. The 3rd day, I tested the waterproofing. A week earlier, I had worn my old Targhee IIs walking 1 mile through knee-high wet grass and my feet had been soaked, so I decided to try it in these. I didn't notice my feet feeling wet while walking, but when I took off my boots and socks, my wool socks were slightly damp at the toe and heel...it may have been water coming in from the top or dripping down from my pants, which were thoroughly soaked below the knee. In summary, Additionally, the laces seem to come untied, which can be corrected by double-knotting them, but one thing I appreciate about the Targhee IIs is that the laces always stay firmly in place. I find them less comfortable above the ankle than the Traghee IIs, but they are lighter and the soles are comfortable, and I think they provide more agility and stability because of the heel being lower and being able to sense the ground better.

Fantastic boot

At first I was concerned that they were too small. I hiked in Sedona and the Grand Canyon in them and they were very comfortable. They are not clunky or as wide of other hiking boots which I appreciated!

Definitely a great hiking boot! And definitely the best option for wide feet!

Finally! A boot that fits my wide foot! I am exactly a size 9 but usually wear a 9.5 in shoes to allow for a little room. I tried on several different brands of hiking shoes and boots (Ahnu, Salomon, etc) - all the usual go-to's and popular choices but none of them fit my foot. My foot isn't even that wide! I was so relieved when I got these Keens. They are super comfortable and didn't need any breaking in. I have been hiking in them - one 12 mile trip and one 5 mile trip - in and out of puddles and I love them. I read a bunch of reviews on them - like I do with everything - and several people said that they were good for wide feet. I can definitely confirm that. I like the color a lot. It's true to the picture. I'm still not sure how I feel about the waterproof aspect of them. Like I said, I was in and out of puddles (on purpose to test the boots). It felt like my socks got wet but when I took my boot off, they were completely dry. It was weird lol. I also tested them out on slippery surfaces and they had decent traction. I'm definitely happy that I got these and will forever be a Keen customer from now on!

NOT waterproof but light and comfortable

I bought these about 4 months ago for a trip to Montana, I was sent the wrong ones but eventually found them in stores. I’m pretty constantly a size 6 unless the shoe is a little wide then I’m a 5.5. I ordered a 6 and they are pretty narrow so I was worried about them being uncomfortable with hiking socks. I loosened the laces as much as I could and they felt great.I wore these straight out of the box to hike in the mountains daily for a week and had no blisters, aches, or pains. I specifically went with these due to them being so lightweight and the cross between a hiking boot and tennis shoe.Things to beware of-They are not waterproof. My feet stayed dry the first time trekking through some water but once they were fully exposed to water while out in some rain they now soak in any ounce of moisture.-Traction is awful in gritty/sandy dirt and wet surfaces. The tread is actually good however traction is non existent rocky terrain with gritty dirt or moisture.-The shoe strings are skinny and short. Simple fix would be replacing them. Problem is the holes are smaller than most shoes so thicker laces won’t fit. Since these are narrow the length of my laces are maxed out and I struggle to get them tied securely.Besides those issues they are extremely comfortable and have held up well with all the dirt, mud, water, and miles they’ve been through these past 4 months.
