Best boots I've ever owned. If you're more of a trail hiker, they're probably too heavy and overkill ... but for off trail hiking in places with sharp rock, hot surfaces, pokey, stingy stuff ... just exceptional.I live in Arizona and hike primarily well off trail over hot surfaces, sharp rocks, etc. After Danner changed how they fit (the widest option now no longer comes close to fitting), I tried Merrells ... and they are made of butter. I tried a few other brands as well, and was becoming frustrated that I couldn't find any boot maker that didn't cater to the 'fashion hiker' aesthetic over a more serious boot. I coughed up the money for this boot and, it's incredible. It's tough and exceptionally comfortable. It took awhile to break in and that involved some blisters, but that's to be expected. Once worn in, putting them on actually feels good, which is a new experience for me. The laces are strong and easy to work with, and I have no problem getting in and out of them even if wet and at a 10" size. The tall tread and large gap at the heel takes a little time to get used to. I would wear these on casual hikes and just around for awhile ... you end up about an inch taller. I took a good fall when I caught it on something that I otherwise wouldn't have, but at this point would not have. The tread is still in great shape after about 200 miles of hard hiking in harsh environments. Considering that the best Merrell has to offer is barely wearable after 10 miles in these conditions, that's rare and impressive. The bead along the top of the toe began to fray relatively early, but this doesn't seem to have any structural issues so it's more aesthetic than anything. I'm not overly concerned. The wide offering is actually wide enough. I might suggest getting a half size larger if you're able to, but mine are quite comfortable.I like them enough that I bought a second, identical pair that's waiting patiently in the closet, unworn, for the time far in the future when these ones need to be sent in for repair.
They run true to size if not bigger. Have a jacked up foot and normally wear wide boots. Bought these in wide and they were extremely large. Ended up returning and purchased another pair from a local store. The boots that I bought as a replacement however are amazing. It is always hard to pay so much money for something like a pair of boots, with that said these are worth every penny. Comfortable out the box and after several miles of breaking them in they are getting better.
Work at a sawmill, on my feet alot, my feet never get tired or hot, best boot I ever owned.
These boots are slightly bigger and stiffer than expected. I have the mountain guide 400's and they were sized perfectly and easy to break in. I think the non-insulated boots are slightly bigger because there is no insulation taking up that extra space. However, after adding an insole, Kenetrek Boot Wax, and additional miles they seem to be breaking in nicely. I would buy them again, but hopefully I won't have to. Hoping the two boots will be the last I have to purchase.
Bought this boot in a D width an EE width. Returned the D width was typical of most D width boots that aggravate my neuroma in the right foot. The EE version allowed room for the foot to spread and had on pinching issues. The boot is well made and provides a solid, slightly stiff ride. No break-in issues thus far.
Very comfortable and fit well,8 wide was perfect, that’s my usual size,no break in needed
I was very impressed with the fit of these as i have short wide feet and it's hard for me to find boots. They fit very nicely and accommodated my toes quite well out of the box. Their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness. They are seriously sturdy. But that sturdiness means that they are very stiff and inflexible. I happened to be looking for something more light and nimble for long work days and many miles on my feet. But if you're looking for solid boots that provide excellent protection and traction these are for you. If you're looking for light and nimble, look elsewhere.
Excellent durability with a nice and stiff out sole for great stability.
