Lace shoe Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Dr. Martens, also known as Doc Martens, Docs, or DMs, has stomped its way into history since 1901. Originally created by Dr. Klaus Maertens, a German soldier who designed a comfortable air-cushioned boot to aid his recovery from a broken foot, the footwear quickly gained popularity. In 1960, the brand we know today was born with the iconic 1460 boot, adopted by British working-class youth and later embraced by various subcultures for its durability and rebellious spirit.
Dr. Martens prioritizes both timeless design and rugged construction. Their shoes are instantly recognizable by their air-cushioned sole, yellow stitching, and utilitarian details. Made with high-quality leather, Dr. Martens boots and shoes are built to withstand years of wear and tear, making them a true investment piece.
I love these shoes, I bought them for work. These shoes will last a very long time. The break in was easy as I followed the YouTube video of the ice foot in the freezer Dr Martens video. A strong buy.
Great shoes really liked the look and material, hate to send them back but high arch and the shoe just doesn't fit. Shame really liked them, appreciate the service and the quick response.👍
I absolutely love these shoes however, they are a beast to break in! The run small so size up if you are a half size. After a year I notice a slight tear at the top of the heal. Going to sell my size 8 and get a 9. I wear a 42 and this 41 fits but is a little too snug to be comfortable all day.
Far too narrow. I went a size up (12uk/13us) because of the other reviews but they are so tight across the toe box I can't wear them. Completely different fit than my other older DocMartens. I have two other pairs in size 11uk/12us that just took a little breaking in because I'm a EE to EEEE width depending on the brand. My foot pushes out the leather a little in my other pairs but they are soft enough to stretch. These will never break in enough to wear. The heel is huge with too much room at the sides. So unless you have a narrow foot, like D or less, don't bother. They do have a professional look and very comfortable sole as others have stated.
I love these shoes! They're great! Authentic, fitted, high quality, and non slip. I needed some plain, clean, walkable Oxfords for work and they are exactly that. The soles are sturdy and a bit heavy, which I like, and the leather is polished and smooth. My feet are rather small (kids' 3-4, women's 5 in fancy shoes) and I got the UK 3. There is a small amount of room in the toes and back that work out well for me since I use thick socks. Lovely. :)
If you do not have patience and maybe a little show stretch do not buy. These need to be broken in. Once they are broken in you will clear,y see what all they hype is about but you have to work for it. Took me about 1 week of daily office wear to start noticing they were breaking in. By week two I could tell that I had made a good purchase. I walk approximately 1-2 miles a day in these between coming to the office and going around the grounds. The souls are great and give good cushioning. Also good heel cushioning offered by the soles while driving as I am also in traffic for up to 2 hrs a day round trip.
The toe box for this pair, is like that narrow round toe and NOT the round toe. Basically looks like a men’s dress shoe for work. Not like the unisex doc look. Also, my pair came with some weird gunk on the inside. Kind of crusty/hard. So I’m taking off two stars and returning. Yes they’re real, if you guys notice where to check out...it’ll say “sold by XYZ store” and you can change it. So if it says “shoes4lezz” ..sounds sketchy? Change it. There’s Robert Wayne and Zappos that also sell through amazon, so make sure you check that before paying
I had a previous pair of basic Dr. Marten oxfords that were made of synthetic leather, and they were quite comfortable and broke in very quickly. The model 1461 is made of very sturdy leather and the toe box is more narrow than on the synthetic pair. I ordered the same size as the previous, synthetic pair, 11 D, but should have ordered a half size or full size larger, I suppose. However, these are breaking in and are getting more comfortable every day- I think they will be fine in the long run. After several weeks, I can comfortably wear them all day. They are very good looking shoes and look quite nice with business attire.
