The shoe is a soft leather and my son found it very comfortable from the start. There was no "break in" period. However, after a few weeks of wear, the leather on the front seems to be peeling off. My son is not easy on his shoes, but I expected a little more durability.
These are good quality shoes for the money. They are true navy, and my kid hasnt complained about any discomfort. They're not cheap looking which I was worried about given the price. All in all just a great, basic, no frills, dress shoe for boys.
