I fell in love with these shoes the first time I saw them online and I waited very impatiently until they dropped down below half price and then I snapped up a pair in black and a pair in tan. This was my first purchase from Madden Girl and no one had written any informative reviews of his shoes so I had no idea that no matter what style shoe you buy from this line you will need to go up at least a half size and sometimes more. I wear size 8.5 M shoe most of the time and that is what I ordered with these. I loved the old fashioned styling of the shoe and these shoes took me back in more ways than one. Not only do they look old fashioned but you need a shoe horn to get your foot down in the shoe. Now some of you younger people probably don't even know what that is, and with good reason. Roughly 30 years ago they fell out of use because people finally came to realize that you shouldn't need a personal slim jim to jam your foot down into your shoe.I convinced myself that the shoe was just stiff because it was made of synthetic fibers and I undid all the laces, spread the shoe open as wide as possible and forced my foot in. I immediately fell in love with the way the shoe looked on my foot and even though it was snug it wasn't in any way painful...yet. The Rileigh is a classic oxford with detailed wingtip styling, a peep toe and a ribbon tie to match the color of the shoe. A thin synthetic sole has the little grooves to provide traction and prevent slipping on floors and icy sidewalks. The 3" heel is neither bulky nor spiky so you don't feel as though you are walking around in a clod hopper or teethering around on stilletos with sore calf muscles at the end of the day. This shoe just evokes thoughts of years gone by and looks great with either jeans, a business suit or a soft, flowing dress. Cushioning is almost non existent in this shoe so if you plan on adding insoles, which I strongly suggest, you will definitely need to go up from your usual size but no worries there because this is one of those shoes that actually make your feet look smaller. I would have given this shoe 5 stars except Madden deserves to lose at least one star for his lack of realistic sizing. I don't know where the designers got the dimensions for a woman's foot but something is definitely off in that department. And since Amazon goes from a 8.5 to a 10 I am stuck with my snug, uncushionable shoe which I can only wear when I don't have to do a lot of walking or standing. But I will be looking good while I am sitting at the table.
