If you have any problems with the front of your foot, I recommend giving these a try!I have chronic bursitis in the ball of my foot, and was looking for a walking shoe that would relieve/support that area enough so I can comfortably power-walk without paying a painful price later.I chose these after trying on numerous brands and models (Asics, Nike, New Balance, Reebok, Dr. Schol's, and several other Ryka models). This model of Ryka was far and above the best because:- They have, hands-down, the best cushioning.- They feel great just walking around, but if you want to power walk they have all the support and structure one needs.- They're light but solid.- The front is roomy. I do not have wide feet or bunions, but I often find women's athletic shoes to be too narrow across the toe box.- They handle trails, packed dirt, and damp surfaces well. They're not trail shoes, and I would not use them for a hike where you'd be scrambling around on rocks, but for light trail/off-pavement surfaces they're fine.- The front half is as well-cushioned as the heel. This last part is most important: athletic shoes are often well-padded in the heel and have arch support, but the front often feels flat and hard, and the heel is raised above the toes, putting pressure on the front of the foot. These are quite spongy up front, and your foot sits flatter within them. This relieves stress on the ball of my foot enough so that I can comfortably power walk for miles or just knock around in them all day. They are ridiculously comfortable. I actually look forward to wearing them.I tried on the newer Devotion 2 model and noticed no difference in feel. Given how much less this model is, I bought two pair for less than the price of one Devotion 2!My only complaint is that I SO wish they came in non-girly colors. While I was thrilled to find these in black, I hate the hot pink details (I'm tempted to take a sharpie marker to them), and the other colors (bright purple, garish blues and greens) are just so...stereotypical. But that's an annoyance (to me) with women's sneakers in general, and it's more important that these are great shoes, which they are. I can't recommend them enough!
I have high arches, so, naturally these were almost too tight on top. But I got it to work by removing the laces (I hate shoes laces in general, especially the slippery kind like these were) and fitting "LOCK LACES (Elastic No Tie Shoelaces)" (also bought on Amazon) into them. They fit well and I can wear them all day usually without a problem. It's just after a full day of carrying heavy things and rushing around without hardly a break to sit down that my feet end up sore, but that's understandable. They definitely last longer than my previous $25 shoes. The high heel took some getting used to, as well as hotter feet (I don't notice it near as much, so I think the breathablility problem lessened considerably once the shoes were broken in and the cushions in various spots flattened. I'd prefer to have my heels be flatter and closer to the ground, but that's okay. I like how the very bottom (outside of shoe) is designed, as it matches well with my foot movements in varying terrain. I walk a lot on broken sidewalks, hills, and stairs. Sound-wise, my footsteps are a little noisy (thunk, thunk, thunk) when I'm rushing around over thin carpet, but it's good because I need people to know I'm coming so they can get out of my way in time without me having to stop as much. But the noise isn't annoyingly loud, so it's very adaptable.
I LOVE these shoes. I purchased them a year ago when I was very pregnant and needed a good, supportive, comfortable shoe. I was a bit concerned at first because the laces didn't seem to close the shoe very much, and I've never needed a wide shoe and didn't have any foot swelling during my pregnancy. They didn't need to be broken in at all to be comfortable, very supportive in every way. I have worn these shoes walking and running, and even to work on a busy surgical floor as a nurse and they keep my feet comfortable. Not the best for hiking, but everything else they are wonderful. They've held up pretty well, the fabric is just starting to show signs of wear after one year which is pretty good! They don't clean super well, but decent. I would definitely buy these again.
The first time I bought ryka's was 10 years and 3 kids ago. I went with the wide, as my feet have clearly changed. These fit really well and I wore them around the house the first day to avoid blisters. No issues with that. I do use the lace lock, so the laces were a little short, but I can still tie them. When walking/running on the treadmill tonight things started off fine. After a bit I noticed I could feel all of the sole through the shoe. Meaning where the peaks in the sole were, it felt harder and the valleys my foot moved more. Like stepping on large smooth pebbles. It was weird.Previously with the shoes there was really great arch support, but with these my arches felt like they were breaking. If you have high arches you know what I mean, it's fairly painful and feels like you're pulling a tendon in your arch. It may just be my feet getting used to them, so I'm giving them a break. But, still no blisters, no skin irritation even after my sock slipped down.Update: sticking with the 4 stars, definitely only walking shoes, not speed walking, light jogging - walking. Just walking. But that's fine, they're fine. Now to go buy some ryka running shoes, because, still no blisters nor other major issues.
