I like the basic less-is-more style. I’m not trying to change the game. I’m trying to go with what works. I feel like when i look down, certain shoes are better for certain tricks. In my shoe, the toe just makes you want to kickflip. I look down and it makes me hyped to skate in. I’m addicted!”-figgyy Emerica. Empowering youth... Through skateboarding!

About Skateboarding Shoes

Shred with Confidence: The Ultimate Guide to Skateboarding Shoes

Skateboarding is a sport that demands both style and function. Skateboarding shoes are more than just footwear; they're an extension of your board, allowing you to shred with confidence and control. With a vast array of styles and features available, choosing the perfect pair of skateboarding shoes can feel overwhelming. Fear not, aspiring shredders! This ultimate guide will equip you with the knowledge to navigate the world of skateboarding shoes, ensuring you find the perfect pair to match your riding style and keep you comfortable conquering those tricks.

Built to Last: Durability is Key for Skateboarding Shoes

Skateboarding involves wear and tear on your shoes. Here's what to prioritize for long-lasting performance:

  • Sturdy Materials: Look for shoes made from high-quality materials like suede or canvas, known for their durability and resistance to abrasion.
  • Double Stitching: Reinforced stitching, especially around the toe box and seams, adds extra strength and extends the lifespan of your shoes.
  • Vulcanized Construction: This construction method bonds the sole directly to the upper, creating a flexible and board-feel sensitive shoe ideal for skateboarding.

Grip It and Rip It: Traction Matters in Skateboarding Shoes

Maintaining control on your board is crucial. Here's what to consider for optimal traction:

  • Sole Pattern: A herringbone tread pattern is a popular choice for skateboarding shoes, offering excellent grip on various surfaces.
  • Sticky Rubber: The quality of the rubber compound in the sole plays a significant role. Look for shoes with sticky rubber for maximum grip on your board.

Ankle Support: Finding the Balance Between Comfort and Protection

Ankle support is a personal preference in skateboarding shoes. Here's a breakdown of the options:

  • High-Top Shoes: These shoes offer maximum ankle support, ideal for beginners or those who prioritize stability during landings and tricks.
  • Low-Top Shoes: These shoes provide a more lightweight and comfortable feel, preferred by experienced skaters who value flexibility for board control.
  • Mid-Top Shoes: These offer a compromise between ankle support and flexibility, suitable for skaters who want a balance of both.

Comfort Counts: Shredding Shouldn't Hurt Your Feet

Comfort is essential for long skate sessions. Here's what to consider for a comfortable fit:

  • Proper Sizing: Ill-fitting shoes can lead to blisters and fatigue. Get professionally sized for skateboarding shoes, considering factors like width and arch support.
  • Breathable Materials: Your feet will get hot during a skate session. Choose shoes made from breathable materials like mesh panels to keep your feet cool and dry.
  • Break-in Period: Give your new skateboarding shoes some time to adjust to your feet. Wear them for short periods initially to break them in before hitting the skatepark.

Shred with Confidence: The Perfect Skateboarding Shoes Await

By prioritizing the features discussed in this guide, you can choose skateboarding shoes that perfectly match your riding style and skill level. Remember, the right shoes can significantly enhance your comfort, board control, and overall skateboarding experience. So, invest in a quality pair, shred with confidence, and land those tricks with style!

Great shoe with a solid technical fit

Shoe fit is so subjective, and there's really no substitute for going and trying on shoes at your local skate shop (or whatever shop carries the kind of shoes you're looking for), so I almost never post shoe reviews. But I like these shoes, so here goes. I'm 37. There's no real skate shop near me, so I can't just go and try on lots of skate-specific shoes (aside from a few big brands at the mall that all felt like big marshmallows). I just started skateboarding again after about 20 years, and I wanted some shoes that I could wear to make it as easy as possible to learn to roll around and ollie properly. Then maybe other tricks. So that's the context for this review. These are the first skateboard-specific shoes I've ever bought. However, I have range of other "technical" shoes (rock climbing, approach, trail running) so I'm somewhat familiar with judging shoes designed for a particular task. I chose these because they were reasonably priced and the existing reviews on Amazon seemed to indicate that they have (for lack of a better description) a good technical fit - snug, a bit of break-in needed, solid construction, designed to do one thing well. I wasn't disappointed.** Fit **: I have fairly long, narrow feet. I normally wear an 11.5 (and I size my shoes with less than 1/4" from the end of my big toe to the end of the toe box) and the 11.5 in these is a good, snug fit. There's very little volume in the toe box, which made them feel small when I first put them on, but after a few hours of walking and light skating, they fit like a glove. You could wear them without socks (the neoprene-style sock liner in the shoe wraps around almost the whole shoe, including the heel), but I wear them with ultra-light weight wool or tech-fabric socks. Comfortable both ways. If you have wider feet or need more room in the toe box, these are probably not the shoes for you.** Build **: I was surprised by the build quality of these shoes. The stitching, glue, and - well, everything - on the pair I ordered was absolutely perfect out of the box. The upper is quite thin, but I expected that given the previous reviews and the aim of this shoe to be technical footware with good board feel. The end of the toe-box has some additional reinforcement, the sole (on my pair) was perfectly glued (no mess or overrun), the stitching is very nice, and the "feel" of both shoes is like a mirror image - no weird "this heel is slightly looser" or anything like that. Great.** Durability **: I've only had them for a couple of days, so I can't speak to the durability yet. As mentioned above, the top is relatively thin. If you're skating hard or learning tricks, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if you blew the tops out after a month or less. To put this in context: I can't ollie. I'm currently following the various YouTube videos that show you how to go through the various motions - dragging your front foot up the board, hopping off the board halfway through the ollie, holding onto a bar while you do the full ollie motion etc, etc. These shoes feel *great* doing that...much better than the [some other brand] sneakers I was wearing before. I have a better sense of where the board is, and how my foot connects to it. I'd be more than happy if these shoes lasted me a few months given how accurate the feel is.** Arch support **: I include this only because it's one of the criteria Amazon uses for their shoe ratings. These shoes have no arch support. They're technical skating shoes. If you need arch support, look elsewhere. These are extremely low volume shoes, so buying high-arch inserts is unlikely to make them any more comfortable or useful to you, as it will probably just make the shoe feel weird.** Everyday wear **: As you've probably gathered from my review so far, I'm not the guy you'd be looking to for style advice. Having said that, these are low-key, good looking shoes. I could wear them to work, and nobody would notice, but that means practically nothing because I'm about two decades short of the intended audience. However. I wouldn't wear them casually, because - while they're comfortable and fantastic for riding - they're just not that great for walking around. The fit on these shoes is pretty technical and geared towards maximizing board feel - specifically on the upper surface. The toe box is long (meaning you're less likely to destroy your laces when doing tricks) and low volume (meaning they feel a bit cramped when you're not skating, although this evens out a bit after you've broken them in). They're really almost like slip-ons...you could even skate without laces, and not lose a shoe.So. What more can I say? I like these shoes. I think they're going to help me learn to skate better. I couldn't really ask for more.

Best Emericas since the Reynolds

I loved Emericas shoes. The Reynolds low vulc were my go to. But.. time happens. Lost my favorite skate shoe. Tried several others. Then I found this show. The glove type fit, it actually threw me off the first time I went skating with them. It fit like a glove. I felt curves in my board I hadn't before. The style points are just a bonus. But, this is the shoe I've been looking for. I'm gonna keep buying these. Look at the new fig G6. Maybe. But these ones are solid.

maybe order a half size big and replace the insoles

ordered 11.5 at first, my usual shoe size, but the toe was too small, no wiggle room, had to go to 12, fit kinda loose - but then I ripped out the insoles and put in my nike SB solarsoft insoles and now they feel really good. the insoles suck, so get some nice ones- other than that, very grippy and solid feeling shoes, haven't had a chance to skate them much (injury) but the little I did felt great (with the nike insoles).

Great shoe, tight sides for the first 2 days.

Awesome shoe, fit is a little snug on the sides. You can totally wear this without laces the sock feature is great. The heel collar it super comfortable. I've skated around in them, but haven't "skated" in them; board feel felt awesome. Size 13 felt true to size I like my shoes with wiggle room in the toes and these guys definitely gave me that. Most of my time is spent walking and running around and they've been great on all accounts.

Somewhat disappointed

I was disappointed in the fact that the insole was different and not as advertised, I was expecting to get an authentic insole with the colorful print on the inside of the shoe, that was one of the main reasons for the purchase. I was let down when I seen it upon arrival to have just a plain black insole. I also was somewhat disappointed that the shoes were a tight fit compared to my other Emerica shoes.

Cushy and comfortable

I bought a pair of the Figgys on a whim when I saw them on sale for less than $30 in my size, and I am very glad I did so! The first thing I noticed about these shoes was the extremely cushy and comfortable insole/footbed. I actually thought they were going to be much too small for me when I first put them on, but after walking around for a couple hours they are now broken in and molded to my feet. They look pretty stylish too and I can tell they will skate like a dream. I'd recommend them!
