About Walking Shoes

Walk This Way: Top Picks for Comfort and Support in Walking Shoes

Walking is a fantastic way to stay active, improve your health, and explore the world around you. But a comfortable and supportive pair of walking shoes is essential to make your walks enjoyable and prevent injuries. With so many options on the market, choosing the right walking shoes can feel overwhelming. Fear not, fellow walkers! This guide will unveil some of the top picks for walking shoes, ensuring you find the perfect pair for hitting the pavement in comfort and style.

Understanding Your Needs: The Perfect Walking Shoe for Every Walker

Before diving into specific recommendations, let's consider some key factors to think about when choosing walking shoes:

  • Terrain: Will you be walking primarily on sidewalks, trails, or a mix of both? Different terrains require different shoe features.
  • Walking Distance: Are you a casual walker who enjoys strolls around the neighborhood, or do you train for long-distance walks/hikes?
  • Support Needs: Do you have any specific foot conditions or require extra arch support for maximum comfort?

Top Picks for Walking Shoe Comfort and Support: Walk in Confidence

Now, let's get to the good stuff! Here are some of the best walking shoes that prioritize comfort and support for various walking styles:

  • Cushioned Comfort: Brands like Brooks and Hoka One One offer shoes with exceptional cushioning, perfect for long walks or those who need extra shock absorption.
  • Lightweight Performance: For brisk walks or those who prioritize speed, consider lightweight walking shoes from brands like Adidas or New Balance. These shoes offer good support without feeling bulky.
  • Trail-Ready: If your walks take you off the beaten path, opt for trail-specific walking shoes from brands like Salomon or Merrell. These shoes provide added stability and traction on uneven terrain.
  • Supportive Stability: For walkers with specific foot needs or those who require extra arch support, brands like Saucony and Asics offer shoes with advanced support features.

Walk in Comfort and Style: Additional Tips for Choosing Walking Shoes

Beyond the brand and specific features, here are some additional tips for selecting the perfect walking shoes:

  • Get sized properly: A snug but comfortable fit is essential. It's best to get sized at a reputable shoe store in the afternoon when your feet are slightly swollen.
  • Consider your socks: The socks you wear can impact the fit and feel of your shoes. Choose socks specifically designed for walking or athletic activities.
  • Take them for a test walk: Don't just try the shoes on in the store; walk around in them to ensure they feel comfortable and supportive.

Lace Up and Explore: The World Awaits You in Comfort

With the right walking shoes on your feet, you'll be ready to conquer any path. Remember, comfort and support are key to making your walks enjoyable and preventing injuries. So, lace up your new walking shoes, embrace the fresh air, and walk this way towards a healthier and happier you!

Durable, no joke

I have wide feet and go hiking a lot. I took a pair of Merrill’s to Iceland last year thinking they would be my new go-to hiking shoes, but not one year later they’ve started getting holes in them. By contrast, I bought my first pair of this shoe 5 years ago. They endured a lot and the leather upper never got holes. I stopped wearing them after the rubber sole started wearing off one after about four years and many miles. Now I’m buying them again because they are wide enough (and unlike the newer Propets the toe box is spacious and doesn’t dig into the top of my foot) and my first pair lasted longer than any other shoes I’ve owned.

4.5* Excellent for me, but may be too narrow for someone else.

I wear a size 10, D to accommodate orthotics and have a narrow left heel, and this last attribute makes it difficult for me to find shoes that fit well. Usually, the left heel will slip off. I ordered 5 shoes though Amazon.Com and the company it bought a few years ago, Zappos.com, including well-respected brands like Ecco, Dansko, Rockport, and Drew.. All were well-made, but only the Dunham shoe was narrow enough to fit well. It fit me exceptionally well, but it may be too narrow for many people. For people like me, this may be the shoe you've been looking for.The upper left part of the shoe was a bit too tight, hitting my little toe, but this loosened up after about 3-4 weeks; I'm very glad I kept them. They're solidly build with good traction, and I like the appearance. I also got used to the multi-colored laces, but you could always replace these with something else. The arch support is fair; I would try wearing these with orthotics if you need extra support. I think they're a good everyday shoe that compares very well to others in the $100-%150 price range. NOTE: I recently discovered that I have toe pain related to MTP degeneration five years after breaking that toe. The Dunhams accommodate a flat rigid orthotic. However, my doctor has recommended the highly cushioned, and more rigid Hoka One One brand for my condition (not these shoes), and I expect I'll alternate between wear those and wearing this shoe.

Great shoes but run small and narrow.

This is the 2nd pair of these shoes that I have owned, and I think that they are very comfortable and supportive. I normally wear size 12D shoes, and my first pair of these are 12Ds and fit fine, but this time 12Ds were too narrow and too short, and I had to buy 13Ds to fit properly. I think they are narrower and shorter than most shoes of the same size. In the photo, my old 12D shoes are on the left and the new 13Ds are on the right- exactly the same width (new 12Ds are about 1/4” narrower), and very little difference in length. I think they currently run at least a half size small.

Comfortable and durable

Really happy with this purchase. I have had foot problems my whole life and these make my work day so much more tolerable.I researched online about measuring my foot properly before ordering.Love the soles, although they are a BIT hard. The waterproofing is great, I've stood in foods over the laces (like where you'd contact a soccer ball to kick it) and I have stayed nice and dry.Highly recommend, especially if you have flat arches and pronating problems like me.

A size to small

These are the 3rd pair of Dunham's that I have brought. The first 2 pairs fitted really well and I like them a lot. These ones were to short. I thought the the sizing of Dunham would have been consistent across all shoes and sizes. Unfortunately I needed to return them.

need to reconsider

the reason i bought these is because of what the thread look like. i surely would not slip on ice and snow. first time wearing them today, walked into a fast food place and as i walked into the restroom i notice that the floor had been mopped. as i came out , the shoes gave way and down i went. If someone can tell me what to do to make the tread have more grip, i would recommend them. also even though they a narrow, a little loose, i need to get some orthopedic insoles.

Not slip resistant

The fit and feel of this shoe is great. But it is not slip resistant as advertised. In fact it is one of the most slippery pair of shoes I have ever had on my feet. I returned them.
