I really love Altra Lone Peak Trailrunners. They keep my weak ankles supported, without adding any unnecessary arch supports. I hiked 700 miles in my last pair, which is about 200 miles too far for this shoe. This particular pair I just received is a bit different from my last. They are actually not black as advertised but they are a dusty grayish-green, a lot like the color of a black pair after a day of hiking on dusty trails. I find I don’t mind that at all. This pair cups my heels particularly well and lace-up better than any previous version of Altra Lone Peak Trailrunners. That’s a huge improvement over previous versions. I wish Altra did a better job at cushioning the Lone Peak Trailrunners as they do with their Torin 2.5 Trailrunners, which are like walking on a cloud. I could have used that kind of cushioning when walking the steep rocky trails of France’s GR 65. The Torin unfortunately does not have the kind of grip as the Lone Peak. I find that I have to add good cushioned inserts (like the Trailblazers) in the Lone Peak, having to tolerate a little arch support in order to get the cushioning. That adds another $50 to the overall cost of these shoes. But with three bone spurs and plantar fasciitis in both feet, It's worth the extra cost. Still, they are the best hiking shoes I’ve found so far, even better for my feet than the Italian Dolomites hiking boots or Germany’s Lowa hiking boots. The zero-drop is non-negotiable for my finicky feet even though some of its value is lost by the need to add cushioning with arch support. My high arches do not appreciate being artificially supported. Altra should really address that issue. I size up 1 1/2 sizes. I usually wear a 7 1/2 shoe, but I need the size 9 for steep downhill treks. This makes the wide toe box look much like clown shoes, but it's worth it for the extra room for downhill scrambles. My feet never are cramped or blistered. This shoe requires almost no break-in time. I did 8 miles on my first day of wearing them with no blisters or hot spots. These do feel a little flimsier than previous Lone Peaks, which makes me wonder if this pair is a knock-off. I'll wear this version as a training shoe to be on the safe side and save my recently purchased old faithful Lone Peak Altras for my next trip abroad where replacing them can be problematic.
Man, do I love my hiking boots. No hot spots, blisters, rubbing, etc. Nice wide toe box with enough room for doubling up on socks, when needed. No breaking in necessary. Walked 90+ miles across Scotland. All terrains, in the rain. Not waterproof but no problem! Shoes dried fast! These boots are only great if you don't have plantar/foot issues. Zero drop/elev so you feel the trail under your feet. Hi top keeps the ankle secure. These are very lightweight! My feet were never sore at the end of 15+ mile day and ready to go the next day with no tiredness. Boots are true to size. I wear a 7.5 wide normally.
I have been slowly converting to all wide-toe shoes after years of discomfort. I tried a pair of Keen hiking shoes, as they are supposed to be wider in the toe box than the Merrells I have always used, but I felt like my feet slid around a lot going up or down hill in the Keens. The Altras have been incredible. Soft but supportive without being stiff, no sliding around, and plenty of room for my toes to remain in a normal anatomic position. Big fan!
Super comfortable and durable! I put a lot of miles on these hiking and they still look pretty good after two years. I love the color but wouldn’t get this color again because they get super dirty on the trails I frequent.
I had these shoes in my cart for a long time waiting for the price to come down a bit. I'm so glad I got them! These things are the most comfortable shoes I've ever had on my feet. I've only done a few short hikes in them, so I can't speak to their durability yet, but so far I'm very impressed!
Comfortable, easy to lace up, has good traction. No drain ports, which helps my feet to stay drier when trails are only a bit wet. These seem to be made more for actual hiking and backpacking. They have more lateral stability than the high-top Lonepeaks shoes. The toe cap actually has 3 stitches to help keep it from popping off. However, the thread is starting to look a bit frayed after only 2 extended backpacking trips; will see how this works out after a hundred or so miles. The fit is good; I always get altras in a 1/2 size larger than my street shoes. These are roomy, but not overly so.
