About Training and Gym Shoes

Find Your Fit: The Ultimate Guide to Training and Gym Shoes

Hitting the gym or tackling a tough training session is all about pushing your limits. But before you conquer that next burpee or deadlift a new personal best, make sure you're equipped for success from the ground up. The right pair of training and gym shoes can make all the difference in your workout, enhancing your performance, preventing injuries, and keeping you comfortable. So, lace up and get ready to find your perfect fit with this ultimate guide to training and gym shoes.

Understanding Your Needs: Different Types of Training Shoes

The world of training and gym shoes isn't one-size-fits-all. Different activities require specific features to optimize your workout. Here's a breakdown of some common training shoe types:

  • Cross-training shoes: These versatile shoes provide a good balance of support and flexibility, making them ideal for a variety of workouts like circuit training, HIIT classes, or casual gym sessions.
  • Running shoes: If running is your primary focus, choose shoes designed for cushioning and impact absorption. Look for features like responsive soles and breathable mesh uppers.
  • Weightlifting shoes: These prioritize stability and support for heavy lifting exercises. They typically have a flat sole and a raised heel for optimal form and power transfer.

Considering the Key Features: Finding the Perfect Balance

Once you've identified the type of training you'll be doing most, consider these key features to ensure your shoes support your needs:

  • Cushioning: Look for shoes with enough cushioning to absorb impact and protect your joints, especially for high-impact activities like running or jumping.
  • Support: Proper support is crucial for maintaining good form and preventing injuries. Look for shoes with a snug fit around the midfoot and a stable heel.
  • Flexibility: While stability is important, some activities require flexibility for agility and movement. Consider how much flexibility you need based on your chosen training program.
  • Breathability: Training can get sweaty! Opt for shoes with breathable materials to keep your feet cool and comfortable.

Fit for Success: Don't Neglect Proper Sizing

The perfect training and gym shoes can only do their magic if they fit properly. Here are some tips for ensuring a good fit:

  • Try on shoes at the end of the day: Your feet can swell slightly throughout the day, so an afternoon fitting is ideal.
  • Leave some wiggle room: Your toes should have some space to wiggle freely without feeling cramped.
  • Consider socks: If you wear thick socks to the gym, factor that in when trying on shoes.
  • Walk around in the shoes: Make sure they feel comfortable and supportive during movement.

Find Your Perfect Match and Conquer Your Workout Goals

With the knowledge you've gained from this guide, you're well on your way to finding the perfect training and gym shoes. Remember, the right shoes will not only elevate your performance but also keep you safe and comfortable during your workouts. So, invest in a pair that complements your training style and get ready to crush your fitness goals with confidence!

Very comfortable, right support for step/dance aerobics

I bought these shoes for dance and step aerobics, and really like them, they are very comfortable, have the right level of lateral support, good for turning movements and are also quite pretty - I like the design and color, and the strap around the ankle. I went to a great length to get them shipped in to Hungary from the US - unfortunately no option on Amazon to ship them from Europe, which is less sustainable than what I like :-( I am happy with this purchase after a month, using the shoes for 3 trainings, a total of 6 hours weekly. The arch support is very little, I have no problem with that as I don’t have a flat foot, but if this is important for you, plan to use an extra arch support inlay. Highly recommended training shoes for dance aerobics workouts.

Great fit, cushioning, and ankle support.

I always buy Ryka. I buy two new pairs every year on my birthday and wear them to my Zumba classes; I relegate the old pairs to become my run-around-town sneakers. I chose this pair in black because it will later make a great everyday sneaker....not noticable with my everyday black boot cut yoga pants . I ordered second pair in a lively plum and lime just to have something upbeat and cheerful to wear to the gym. I like having two pairs so I am giving each pair a day off from wear in between uses. Ryka always fits perfectly, lasts a long time, and gives awesome support. Great cushioning and ankle support.

Great dance/Zumba shoe!

I spent hours researching Zumba/dance shoes bc I wanted to get back into doing Zumba and I used to own a pair of Nike musique dance shoes. They were so nice-and had the pivot point etc. So I researched and decided to try these. I usually wear an 8.5 in tennis shoes/running shoes ... so I bought 8.5. Hard to tell some bc I read you should order same shoe size you normally wear. I never bought Ryka brand before. My first time. I didn’t know what to expect. In ASICS I wear 8.5. In Brooks I wear a 9. In any case I put these on and does impression was that they felt great. Lots of cushion! Wide enough they feel like a skate shoe almost... and size was perfect. I did put on my thicker socks tho bc imo- it’ll help me absorb even more shock and I gotta day that if I’d put a thin sock on? They may feel a tad big. Not bad. Thicker sock they felt perfect. The high top feeling kept my ankle on place. The shoe itself looked great but Amazon only had 2 colors: black and then pink/grey. This was disappointing bc for the $90 I spent — I’d have wanted more options on color!! Ryka spice it up man!! We want more variety!!!Now performance: I had to try these the second they arrived. So I did a 20 mins Zumba routine on my PS3- and they felt pretty good. We have an area rug in living room and I felt I had to move it and dance on the wood floor to get good movement. These are smooth on bottom- however!!! They got grip still so? They kind of stick to carpet. I’d suggest dancing on floor if you can. Maybe once we break these in and the bottom is smoother? Carpet is fine. Or if you have thin carpet like the kind in offices or hallways? That is fine. Area rug I felt made my feet stick.Overall I’m happy I got these. If I’d gone with a size 8- they ya have been too small. So o say get the size you usually wear and if they feel a tad big use thicker socks. I’m also not used to these yet so I bet they’ll feel perfect after a few more uses. I expected them to look more like space shoes like I’ve seen in some videos bc of the shiny silver- but they were not space like in person. I like them. 4 stars bc I wish they had more colors!!

Add more TENACITY to your workout...

I have been a Zumba Fitness instructor for almost 10 years, & needless to say, I have a closet full of sneakers that I have worn in my quest to find the perfect shoe for me to teach & to continue to enjoy all of the cool dance moves Zumba offers. I am happy to say...MY QUEST HAS ENDED!!! The Ryka Tenacity more than met my expectations when I taught in them the first time without adding my foot inserts I ALWAYS add. Plus, I just found copper infused ones, so I wanted to try them.I put in my new insoles the second time, & I thought I had died & was teaching a Z class in Heaven! These shoes are PHENOMENAL from their soft, cushy insides to their wonderful arch support....these shoes have it all! I can't say enough about these shoes at such a reasonable price. If you need shoes, GET THESE NOW! I bought the black to go with everything. First time I wore them, compliments galore! Christmas is coming...these are your gift to yourself! Dance on...Get Right with Ryka!

no arch or ankle support

This shoe is really cute and comfortable if you have normal feet.unfortunately for me I have a collapsed arch on my left foot and it was like being barefoot, no support on arch or ankle. now my right foot is normal and it was loving this shoe, I really wish I could have kept them. They fit true to size, I wear a size 8 and that is what I ordered. If you DO NOT have any foot problems, then try these I think you'll like them.

Fits true to size for me. I am a size 8. I bought for Zumba workout. They move smoothly on floor, supportive and very comfortable. The shoe strings are a little tight to pull through shoe holes but once you get them tied you are good to go. I was looking for a good shoe specifically for Zumba so l won't injure my body wearing incorrect shoes for dancing. I usually don't spend this much on shoes but it was worth the money to me!

BEST fitting shoe for my post surgical foot

This is the best shoe for my post surgical needs once I was out of the boot cast. I had some fairly major reconstructive surgery on one foot and have had a really difficult time finding a shoe that was high enough above the ankle to accommodate a custom orthotic, but lower than a trail boot to allow some ankle flexibility at the same time. I had tried and returned about a half dozen shoes before finding this one. The extra strap at the midfoot gives added support to my arch area where I had some tendon repair. Great shoe, lightweight, flexible, but extremely supportive where it needs to be. I'll be ordering this one over and over.
